Job Description

Job Title: Equipment Operator Wages: Starting $13.62. Department: Road and Bridge Reports to: Road Foreman Qualifications: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Ability to maneuver trucks with trailers attached; operate heavy equipment including but not limited to backhoe, grader, dump truck, belly dump and lowboy trailer. • Also required to operate chain saws, pavement breakers, and various hand tools. • Ability to perform labor related activities such as brush cutting, raking, shoveling, etc. Knowledge of basic mechanics such as tires, brakes, servicing and perform emergency on road repairs. • Working knowledge of the materials and equipment used to accomplish traffic control objectives, such as sign placement, electronic record keeping, some typing ability and other related office skills. Ability to apply that knowledge. • Ability to exercise sound judgment in appraising situations and making decisions. • Ability to interact in a positive, productive manner with: other employees, the general public, other governmental agencies, contractors and consultants. Education and/or Experience: • Three years’ experience in road building and maintenance operations. • Familiarity with heavy equipment operations and maintenance. • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work. Language Skills: • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Mathematical Skills: • Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability: • Ability to define problems, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License, or ability to obtain same within 90 days of hire • Flagging Certification Card, or ability to obtain same within 60 days of hire. The employee must regularly lift and or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
