Job Description

Island Hills Golf Club is a Raymond Hearn Designed, 18 hole facility located in Centreville Michigan, on Lake Templene. The Assistant will work directly for and with the Golf Course Superintendent to oversee the daily activities of the grounds & irrigation crew in this year-round position. Under the direct supervision of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent will direct and participate in the routine maintenance of the golf course grounds (tees, fairways, rough, cart paths and practice greens) and other areas on the golf course grounds as needed in order to maintain the course in high-quality playing conditions as determined by the Superintendent and Island Hills General Manager. The Assistant Superintendent may serve in the Golf Course Superintendent’s capacity during his/her absence.

Assists in the planning, coordination & maintenance of the golf course, including the tees, fairways, rough, practice greens, and club house grounds Coordinates with the Superintendent for grounds & irrigation crew schedule, daily tasks & use of equipment Keeping the maintenance building, tools and equipment in safe, clean and working order; reports to Superintendent directly for any needs to maintain said working order Assists Superintendent with crew instruction on proper use & care of equipment used to maintain any turf grass areas Under direct supervision of the Superintendent, the Assistant shall supervise and/or be responsible for (or be trained/educated as necessary) pesticide/herbicide applications, equipment calibration and equipment maintenance Assistant shall work with Superintendent to create plans for chemical applications including fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and soil amendments by identifying problems based on his/her professional interpretation Assistant shall supervise the operation and maintenance of the golf course irrigation system, pumps and drainage systems Coordinates & plans with the Superintendent & Mechanic, to maintain consistent level of equipment operation & routine maintenance schedule Assistant shall assist Superintendent with enforcing employee safety, personnel management, evaluation & discipline as well as modifications to the daily work schedule based on his/her professional interpretation

Minimum Education & Experience:

2-4 Year Turf Grass degree from accredited college or university, with previous golf course experience preferred State of Michigan Commercial Pesticides Application Certificate (obtained or in progress); along with knowledge of safe/best practice use, mixing and application of chemicals and the ability to recognize, identify and recommend treatment for turf grass diseases Irrigation Systems experience Basic mechanic experience preferred Valid Drivers License

Skills & Abilities:

The ability to supervise & schedule a crew of 5+ individuals in order to effectively utilize the individuals skills & strengths Ability to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver The ideal candidate will understand the importance of physically working on the course with the crew to maximize productivity and foster an efficient & fair working environment Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules/etiquette and methods of play Working knowledge of the routine maintenance of golf course turf grass (tees, fairways, greens, etc.) as well as the seeding and maintenance for golf course turf grass

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Minimum of 40 hours per week required, with weekends and holidays (weekends and holiday time in rotation with Superintendent) Ability to work outdoors in any and all safe seasonal conditions (i.e. rain, snow, cold, wind, heat) Employee will be exposed to heavy machinery, machinery with moving parts, machinery operating at high sound decibels Employee will have interaction with general public (i.e. patrons) and will be expected to maintain professional and courteous interactions Employee may be exposed to potentially harmful flora and fauna (including but not limited to: stinging insects, poison ivy, poison oak, etc.) Employee will be exposed to controlled chemical substances (i.e. cleaning materials, gasoline/oil, herbicides/pesticides) and will be provided with all necessary PPE Employee can expect the following physical demands (not an encompassing list): Prolonged standing, prolonged walking, regular lifting of over 50 pounds, bending, kneeling, digging, walking on uneven terrain, walking along creek banks, climbing, etc. Paid Holidays Paid Sick Time Paid Vacation Time Golfing privileges
